The art of the moment

My name is Jeanne Koepp. I am a ceramicist. Since 1990 I craft vases from clay. My workshop is in the Berlin district Prenzlauer Berg. Because of my African roots, several journeys though West-Africa and my daily life in Berlin I developed a design that melts these influences. The friction of these contrasting cultures mingles into my aesthetical language. To give elegance and playfulness to my vases I optimize the ratio of footprint, body, shoulders, and neck. Materials:

For twenty years clay and glass has been core material. Glaze and glass are both composed of mineral powder, such as quartz sand, soda, feldspar, lime, and potash. The glaze protects the vessel like a protective skin from the influence of water and mechanical effects. The layer of glaze on the surface of the vase serves in addition as a finishing.

I want to create an object that is reduced to this protective layer of glaze and follows my aesthetical language.

How do I formulate my aesthetics with this raw material?

What are the specifics of this raw material?

How can I approach the limits of form and function with my style?

The quest on where to realize my project lead me to Murano, on this island near Venice glass has been blown for 1000 years. The glass from Murano is desired and world famous for its beauty and color.

Manufacturing this traditionally blown glass vases is very expensive and complex, and many hands are needed. The process of blowing is forward and cannot be rewind. During the process the decisions have to be made quickly.

I travelled to Murano in advance very often. There I meet with the master to discuss my drafts.

For the first collection “Bellezza” I favoured an old craftsmanship: - Bullicante-, with this method bubbles of air are with a metal rod placed inside the glass. These bubbles grant a lightweight appearance to the vases. The lightweight optical appearance is contrasted by the physical manifestation. A 50 cm height vase weights 4 to 5 kg.

The first collection should encompass 15 vases, which are 47-53 cm in height and composed of green glass, individually numbered, signed, and certified.
